Discussion Unlocalized games worth playing?

4/2/2018, 9:30 am
There are a LOT of games that come out in Japan, but not over here? Why? It's usually because the audience the games are aimed at are their local audience. While a lot of Japanese are fascinated with Western culture, the feeling is mutual? I just thought I'd make this thread to discuss what games to you do you think are worth playing, even if they will never see the light of day in the West?

I grew up playing Kingdom Hearts, so I am used to things not being localized. The best version of a game was Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix, and that didn't release state-side for YEARS. (almost a decade!)

I also play games like Phantasy Star Online 2 and the such which will most likely never come to the west due to various reasons.  I also own a Japanese PSN account so I can play it on my PS Vita and PS4, as well as play other Japanese titles on both.

So on this note, to you what games are worth playing regardless? (not including Yakuza stuff because that's obvious.) I am curious to see all of your answers!

(EDIT: Doesn't exclusively have to be japanese localization of course! if there are games in other countries that you can't play in your countries you are more than free to suggest those too!)

Well I'd say the Dodonpachi games would definitely be worth looking at. The onimusha games too would also be a great playthrough. A lot of these can be played through emulator if you can't afford actual copies of the games. There's also Shenmue and Napple tale.
Do you know any good guides for PSO 2? I downloaded the game yesterday but because of the language barrier I'm completely lost.

If you ever played Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 and wonder were the Sequel is I can recommend Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 Fortune for PS4. It also has English Language thanks to it's Hong Kong release but never came to us in the West. Not really the biggest recommendation but it can be pretty good. Today most of the bigger Games from Japan come to us in the West and I'm glad that they do so.

Here, I can't really link things due to being a new member however I'd say go to Arks Layer and look at things there. Get PSO2 Tweaker, which lets you English Patch the game. You'll want to do all of the english patches, as well as use the Telepipe Proxy plugin, that translates items, blocks, enemies, and a lot more. Guides for all of that should be on Arks Layer, which you should be able to look up! (Also go on Ship 2! That is the ship where all of the English players play and is the best ship for most things other than economy.)

That said if you are on PS4 there is no way to translate anything on there due to the lack of ability in terms of modding. (PC is the best way to play anyways) However you should still be able to get by with the menu guides and various other helpful translation guides on Bumped(dot)org as well as other various PSO2 necessities.

If you get everything working well and are on Ship 2, Please feel free to add me! My player ID is Shiokawa, and I play as a level 75 HERO. I'll be sure to help you out with everything I can, when I get on next! :)

Thanks for all the information. I'll be sure to use it to start playing seriously whenever I jump back on. For now I'll read through the guides and stuff to help myself out lol.

Unlocalized games worth playing? G9n6ZA5

Played this along with Wrestle Kingdom 2 on the PS2 back in the day. Funny how the NJPW roster is now in Yakuza 6 and Kiwami 2.
